| Bio: | I grew up at the beginning of the space age. By the time I was zooming around the neighborhood on a second-hand tricycle, I wondered if the earth was flat and if it might go on forever. One day my dad brought home a globe, depicting earth in its spherical glory. Not too much longer after that he got a telescope through which we could explore the night sky. There's something magical about having your eye at one end of a telescope and a very old and distant star on the other. My family moved from Chicago to Dallas, from tall trees, cold winters and short mild summers, to a landscape of scraggly vegetation, intense heat and a culture in the throes of being invaded by commerce and eclecticism. I graduated from college in 1981 but couldn't find work and ended up back in Austin, mixing live sound and sleeping on the floor of a friend's apartment. I was happy to be there and landed a full time tech job soon thereafter. Some big changes were on the way though. The "dot com" boom and bust brought with it a kind of cultural trauma & the perpetual influx of people from many cultures that has made for an interesting life. In thirty years, it's been like living in a psychological vortex that never slows down, a world of chaos and frenetic commercialism, with excitement and tremendous creative force. Beyond a certain critical mass, cities assume a life of their own, marked by a whirl of instinct and reason, going in cycles with just enough chaos to defy prediction. What will the future be like?
